What’s It All about?
So often I hear the question, "so what's the deal on black soap? I’ve heard it's the best soap!"
The handed down story…
I have to say handed down because it is, information passed along from culture to culture, family to family and from me to you...
Authentic African Black Soap is made by the people of the Yoruban tribe located in Nigeria. It is believed that this tribe brought their herbal wisdom with them from their original Egyptian homeland. Secret black soap formulas are carefully guarded as they are passed down through generation. The soap is based on the ancient art of ash treatment finding a revival of interest today.
Genuine African black soap is brownish-black in color. It is soft with an organic shape that can be molded in your hands. It has a delicate texture & a natural earthy smell. It is not oily or scented and it melts easily if left in water.
What’s in traditional black soap?
Black soap claims to purify, lighten, treat acne and dermatitis. It works for many but NOT for all. That is because all black soap is NOT equal. the ingredients truly affect the outcome and performance of any bar soap. Some makers use fragrance oils and some users are allergic to that.
TRUE BLACK SOAP simply consists of roasted plantain skins, cocoa pod, palm kernel oil, coconut oil, salt and ash (no fragrance oil). Some recipes use Shea butter and that's ok (unless you're allergic).
Cocoa Pod Ash is from the shell of the Cocoa fruit & Plantain Peel Ash is from the skins of the plantain fruit. Both serve as the alkali, lending the same function as sodium hydroxide in handmade bar soap.
Palm Fruit Oil comes from the palm fruit. Black Soap uses Red Palm oil. This oil is dark red in color and contains a high content of beta-carotene and lycopene. These powerhouse antioxidant nutrients are the same ones that give tomatoes and carrots and other fruits and vegetables their rich red and orange colors. Red palm fruit oil is also densely packed with numerous tocotrienols, a powerful form of vitamin E.
Shea butter is an excellent skin moisturizer & protectant. It softens skin, speeds the skin’s natural healing process and minimizes scars.
In the US some companies add black dye to regular glycerin or triple milled soaps. These soaps do not possess the medicinal qualities of Authentic African Black Soap.
How our soaps compare?
While Black Soap IS widely popular and has its place in the cosmetic industry, the bottom line is, it isn't the best because of what it is, it works well because of what is contains and omits. When compared to every-day commercial soaps, it's like comparing fruit snacks to real fruit; there is no comparison. Of course black soap is better; the ingredients are better and naturally sourced with little processing.
Our soaps use some of the very same natural ingredients in addition to other beneficial nature provided extras. Our bars compare in effect in that they are detoxifying, cleansing and maintain purity, unadulterated by chemical constituents.
What's most important is that they are completely natural, made with food grade ingredients and are minimally processed. Our soaps are carefully hand-crafted with coconut oil, palm kernel oil, palm fruit oil, olive oil, hemp seed oil and Shea butter; they also contain ingredients with naturally inherent beneficial properties such as calendula, chamomile, natural powders, activated charcoal (from coconut shells) and essential oils. Our soaps have been successful at promoting healthy skin, speeding healing and minimizing blemishes. We’re also happy to say that all of our soaps are free of chemicals, dyes and sulfates, synthetic ingredients and fragrance oils, unlike some commercially made “soaps.”
